What Nationwide actually covers for birds
Nationwide's Avian & Exotic plan is the standout in U.S. bird insurance. Coverage spans accident, illness, hospitalization, diagnostics, prescription medications, and surgery — across essentially the same scope you'd expect from a dog or cat policy, adapted to avian medicine.
What it does not cover: wellness/preventive care for exotics (no add-on available), purely behavioral conditions, and pre-existing conditions. Standard exclusions apply.
Real premium ranges from community data
- Cockatiels and small birds: $18–$22/month
- Conures, Caiques, Pionus, Lovebirds: $22–$30/month
- African Grey, Macaw, Cockatoo, Amazon: $32–$42/month
Premiums vary by deductible ($100/$250/$500/$1,000) and reimbursement (50%/70%/80%, possibly 90% for avian — call to confirm).
Real claim experiences
The r/parrots and r/AfricanGrey communities consistently report successful Nationwide claims for major illness — Aspergillosis, PBFD workups, GI surgery, heavy metal toxicity. The most frequent complaint isn't denial — it's reimbursement timeline. Allow 2–4 weeks from claim submission to deposit.
The FDB gray area
Feather plucking claims are the most contested. Nationwide will generally cover FDB workups when tied to a confirmed medical cause. Pure behavioral plucking claims are typically denied. See our FDB coverage guide.
The 14-day waiting period
Both accident and illness coverage start after a 14-day waiting period from policy effective date. Anything that occurs in those first 14 days is excluded as pre-existing. This is the single biggest reason to enroll a young, healthy bird as early as possible.
How to get a quote
Nationwide doesn't offer instant online quotes for exotics — quotes require a conversation with a rep who specializes in avian and exotic species. We handle that for you. Tell us your bird's species, age, and health history through our quote tool, and we'll get back to you with a real quote within one business day.

Our recommendation
Nationwide is the right choice for most parrot owners — particularly owners of large parrots (African Grey, Amazon, Macaw, Cockatoo) who will rely on the carrier for decades. The 40+ year track record is a real and earned moat. Consider MetLife if you need 0-day accident coverage for a brand-new bird and have verified NY exotic availability.
