African Grey
The most emotionally complex bird you'll ever share your home with
The Real Story
Greys get misunderstood. New owners see intelligence tests on YouTube — the Alex studies, the shape-sorting, the vocabulary — and think they're getting a feathered genius who will love them unconditionally. The reality is more complicated. African Greys are the most emotionally sensitive birds you can keep. They bond deeply, read moods accurately, and can develop serious psychological issues from stress, boredom, or disrupted routines. The grey community uses 'one-person bird' for a reason — your Grey will likely choose you, and tolerate everyone else.
There are two varieties: the Congo Grey (larger, red tail, more widely kept) and the Timneh Grey (smaller, darker, maroon tail). The community debates endlessly which makes a better companion. Timneh people will tell you their birds are calmer, less neurotic, and start talking earlier. Congo people will tell you size matters. Both are right about their own birds. Know which one you have — your vet should too.
The calcium metabolism issue unique to Greys is something every owner eventually learns about. Hypocalcemia can cause seizures — and it's preventable with proper diet and supplementation. The Grey community has strong opinions about Harrison's Bird Foods, D3, and calcium supplementation that every new Grey owner should absorb quickly.
What Keeps African Grey Owners Up At Night
Aspergillosis ("Asperg")
CoveredA fungal infection of the respiratory and immune system. Greys are disproportionately prone. By the time you notice symptoms — voice changes, tail bobbing, labored breathing — it's usually advanced. Treatment is expensive and long. This is the condition Grey owners fear most.
Feather Destructive Behavior (FDB)
ConditionalFDB in Greys is almost always emotional or psychological in origin — stress, boredom, grief, disrupted bonding. It's heartbreaking to watch and expensive to address properly (behavioral vet + avian specialist workup). Rule out medical causes first — what looks like FDB can be early Asperg or PBFD.
Calcium Deficiency / Hypocalcemia
CoveredUnique to African Greys. Seizures can be the first visible symptom. Preventable with proper diet — but diagnosis and treatment require an avian specialist.
Psittacine Beak & Feather Disease (PBFD)
ConditionalA viral disease causing progressive feather loss and beak deformities. No cure — management only. Highly contagious between birds. In multi-bird households, strict quarantine of new birds is essential.
Chlamydiosis (Psittacosis)
CoveredBacterial infection. Zoonotic — can transfer to humans. New York State requires reporting of confirmed cases. Treatable with antibiotics but needs correct diagnosis fast.
