Eclectus parrots broke taxonomy. Males and females look so dramatically different — males brilliant green, females red and blue — that scientists originally described them as entirely different species. Ekkie owners (that's the community shorthand, and yes, it's affectionate) are deeply proud of this. It's also a useful lens for understanding these birds: the sexes have genuinely different temperaments. Females tend to be more independent and nippy. Males tend to be softer and more cuddly.

Diet is the single most important conversation in the Eclectus community. Ekkies have a digestive system fundamentally different from other parrots — longer intestinal tract, designed for a high-fruit, high-vegetable diet in the wild.
