Nationwide is the right choice for most rabbit owners. It's the carrier the rabbit community has trusted for four decades, the claims do get paid, and the coverage of GI stasis and dental disease is genuine. But there are three things you need to know before enrolling that most reviews don't tell you.

What Nationwide Covers for Rabbits

Nationwide's Avian & Exotic plan includes accidents and illnesses, hereditary and congenital conditions (including malocclusion — specifically called out on their rabbit page), diagnostics, surgery, hospitalization, prescription medications, and cancer treatment.

Notably: wellness and routine preventive care are not available as an add-on for exotic pets. You're buying accident-and-illness coverage only.

Three Things Most Reviews Don't Tell You

1. Pre-existing condition exclusions hit rabbits harder than dogs

Rabbits' two most common expensive conditions — GI stasis and dental disease — are exactly the conditions most likely to be documented in early vet visits. Once documented, they're permanently excluded. The rabbit community is full of owners who enrolled after their rabbit's first episode and found the policy nearly useless.

Rule: Enroll before any vet visit. The earlier the better.

2. Nationwide dropped some exotic policies in 2024–2025

This is real and documented in the rabbit owner community. Some long-term exotic policyholders received non-renewal notices. If you're enrolled, maintain good standing and be aware this has happened. If you're enrolling now, also request a MetLife quote — knowing your alternatives is always smart.

3. Claims do get paid — but "related condition" denials are common

GI stasis claims generally process within 5–10 business days when documentation is clean. The problem is "related condition" denials: a new GI episode denied as related to a prior GI note, or a dental abscess denied as related to prior malocclusion. These are the most contested claim situations. Appeals succeed when your vet can document clinical distinction between conditions.

Nationwide vs. MetLife for Rabbits

MetLife entered rabbit insurance in 2022 and offers two meaningful differences: a 0-day accident waiting period (Nationwide is 14 days) and a $10,000 annual limit (vs. $7,500). For new rabbit owners, these are worth considering.
