Netherland DwarfSmallest recognized rabbit breed

The smallest rabbit — and the one with the most severe dental problems of any breed

Netherland Dwarf rabbit
🏋️ 1.1–2.5 lbs📅 10–12 yearsInsurance risk: high

Most extreme brachycephaly of any breed. Lifetime dental maintenance almost guaranteed.

"Netherland Dwarfs are long-lived and deeply loving. Just understand that 'long-lived' means a decade of potentially expensive dental care."

The enrollment timing rule for Netherland Dwarfs:

Enroll your Netherland Dwarf before the first vet visit. Any condition documented before your policy start date is permanently excluded. For this breed, that means enrolling before any dental work, GI episode, or ear treatment is recorded.

Health Conditions & Coverage

High priority

Severe Dental Malocclusion

The Netherland Dwarf has the most compressed skull of any rabbit breed. The jaw is so small that teeth have almost no room to align properly. Tooth root elongation is endemic in the breed — many dwarfs need molar trims every 6–8 weeks from middle age onward. CT imaging is often required to assess root involvement.

NYC cost estimate

$300–$600 per molar trim; $1,500–$2,500 for CT-guided abscess surgery

Insurance coverage

Covered as illness. This is the most common reason Netherland Dwarf claims are denied as pre-existing. Enroll before any dental visit is documented.

Monitor closely

Tear Duct Blockage (Epiphora)

The compressed skull often blocks the nasolacrimal duct, causing chronic tear overflow and staining. Can progress to infection. Requires periodic flushing under sedation.

NYC cost estimate

$200–$400 per flushing procedure

Insurance coverage

Covered as illness.

Monitor closely

GI Stasis

All rabbits face GI stasis risk. Dwarfs are particularly susceptible because pain from dental issues triggers stasis — a dangerous cascade effect.

NYC cost estimate

$1,000–$2,000 with hospitalization in NYC

Insurance coverage

Covered as illness if not pre-existing.

Monitor closely

Spinal Issues

Some dwarf lines carry the "lethal gene" double-dwarf trait which can cause splay leg, skull deformities, or spinal defects. Responsible breeding minimizes risk but cannot eliminate it entirely.

NYC cost estimate

$500–$2,000 depending on severity
