Rex fur mutation means less foot padding — sore hocks are the primary concern

"Mini Rex owners get two surprises: how soft the fur is, and how specific the flooring requirements are to keep those feet healthy."

The enrollment timing rule for Mini Rexs:

Enroll your Mini Rex before the first vet visit. Any condition documented before your policy start date is permanently excluded. For this breed, that means enrolling before any dental work, GI episode, or ear treatment is recorded.

Health Conditions & Coverage

High priority

Sore Hocks (Pododermatitis)

The Rex mutation that creates their signature velvety coat also eliminates the protective fur padding on the feet. On hard flooring, this leads to pressure sores that can progress from skin irritation to deep tissue infection and bone involvement. The most breed-defining health concern for Rex rabbits.

NYC cost estimate

$200–$600 per episode; severe cases $800–$1,500

Insurance coverage

Covered as illness or injury. May be considered pre-existing if documented. Husbandry-related exclusions can apply in severe neglect cases.

Monitor closely

GI Stasis

All rabbit breeds are susceptible to GI stasis. Mini Rex face moderate risk, often triggered by stress, dietary changes, or pain from foot issues.

NYC cost estimate

$1,000–$2,000 with hospitalization in NYC

Insurance coverage

Covered as illness if not pre-existing.

Monitor closely

Snuffles (Pasteurellosis)

Bacterial respiratory infection causing chronic nasal discharge, sneezing, and eye discharge. Very common in rabbits; Mini Rex have moderate susceptibility. Often becomes a lifelong chronic condition requiring periodic antibiotic treatment.

NYC cost estimate

$300–$800 per acute episode; $50–$150/month for chronic maintenance

Insurance coverage

Covered as illness. Chronic recurring cases may become pre-existing after initial diagnosis.

Monitor closely

Dental Disease

Mini Rex have a more normal skull structure than lop breeds, reducing but not eliminating dental risk. Annual dental checks recommended.

NYC cost estimate

$300–$600 for dental trim

Insurance coverage

Covered as illness if not pre-existing.
