Holland LopLop-eared dwarf breed
The most popular rabbit in America — and one of the most expensive to keep healthy

Brachycephalic skull creates lifelong dental and ear risk
"Every Holland Lop owner learns what GI stasis is. The question is whether you learn it from a Reddit post or a $1,800 emergency vet bill."
The enrollment timing rule for Holland Lops:
Enroll your Holland Lop before the first vet visit. Any condition documented before your policy start date is permanently excluded. For this breed, that means enrolling before any dental work, GI episode, or ear treatment is recorded.
Health Conditions & Coverage
Dental Malocclusion
The Holland Lop's flat, compressed skull causes teeth to grow misaligned. Molars develop spurs that lacerate the tongue and cheeks; tooth roots can penetrate the jawbone. Most Holland Lops need at least one dental procedure in their lifetime — many need them every 6–12 weeks.
NYC cost estimate
$300–$600 for molar trim under anesthesia; $1,200–$2,500 for root abscess surgery with CT imaging
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness by Nationwide and MetLife. Preventive trims may be excluded. Pre-existing dental history permanently excludes future dental claims — enroll before any dental work is documented.
GI Stasis
When the digestive tract slows or stops, gas and toxins build up rapidly. Holland Lops are at elevated risk due to their compact build and stress sensitivity. Fatal within 24–48 hours if untreated. The #1 reason rabbit owners call an emergency vet at 2am.
NYC cost estimate
$1,000–$2,000 with hospitalization in NYC; $300–$500 outpatient if caught early
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness. Any prior GI history may result in permanent exclusion — this is the most common reason claims are denied.
Ear Infections (Otitis)
The lopped ear structure restricts airflow in the ear canal, creating a warm, moist environment ideal for bacterial and yeast infections. Recurring infections are common and can progress to inner ear disease causing head tilt.
NYC cost estimate
$200–$500 per episode; chronic cases $800–$1,500/year
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness. Chronic recurring infections may be classified as pre-existing after first diagnosis.
Uterine Cancer
Up to 80% of unspayed female Holland Lops over age 4 develop uterine adenocarcinoma. This is not a rare complication — it is the expected outcome for unspayed females. Spaying before age 2 is the only reliable prevention.
NYC cost estimate
Preventive spay $600–$1,200 in NYC; cancer treatment $1,500–$4,000+
Insurance coverage
Cancer treatment covered as illness. Elective spay typically excluded as preventive care. Enroll before diagnosis.
