English AngoraFully-wooled show breed
The most dramatic rabbit alive — and the highest-maintenance one you can own

Continuous wool growth creates constant GI blockage risk; grooming failures are medical emergencies
"An English Angora needs grooming every 1–2 days without exception. The owners who understand this have beautiful rabbits. The ones who don't have emergency vet bills."
The enrollment timing rule for English Angoras:
Enroll your English Angora before the first vet visit. Any condition documented before your policy start date is permanently excluded. For this breed, that means enrolling before any dental work, GI episode, or ear treatment is recorded.
Health Conditions & Coverage
Wool Block (Severe GI Obstruction)
English Angoras grow the most wool of any rabbit breed — a full coat can weigh more than the rabbit itself. Daily grooming is non-negotiable because ingested wool builds up in the digestive tract and causes fatal obstructions. This is not an occasional risk — it is the defining health challenge of the breed.
NYC cost estimate
$1,500–$3,500 for surgical obstruction in NYC; $500–$1,500 for medical management
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness/obstruction. Husbandry exclusions apply if grooming is clearly negligent.
Heat Stress (Hyperthermia)
The Angora's wool coat provides no cooling. In NYC summers without air conditioning, an English Angora can suffer fatal heatstroke. Emergency treatment is intensive and often unsuccessful once severe.
NYC cost estimate
$800–$2,000 for emergency cooling treatment
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness/emergency if not attributable to clear neglect.
GI Stasis
Beyond wool block, English Angoras face general GI stasis risk. Any episode of pain, stress, or reduced eating can trigger a cascade. Their dense wool also hides body condition changes until problems are advanced.
NYC cost estimate
$1,000–$2,000 with hospitalization in NYC
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness if not pre-existing.
Flystrike (Myiasis)
If the dense wool becomes soiled (from diarrhea, cecotrope buildup, or urine scald) and the rabbit is near flies, maggots can penetrate the skin rapidly. A medical emergency that can be fatal within hours.
NYC cost estimate
$500–$1,500 for emergency treatment
Insurance coverage
Covered if illness/injury. Husbandry exclusions may apply.
