RexPlush-coated medium-large breed
The rabbit that feels like velvet — with the feet of a princess who refuses carpet

Rex fur mutation reduces foot padding in a heavier body — sore hocks are the signature risk
"Rex rabbits need the right flooring. Get that right and you have one of the most trouble-free, affectionate rabbits available."
The enrollment timing rule for Rexs:
Enroll your Rex before the first vet visit. Any condition documented before your policy start date is permanently excluded. For this breed, that means enrolling before any dental work, GI episode, or ear treatment is recorded.
Health Conditions & Coverage
Sore Hocks (Pododermatitis)
The Rex mutation creates the breed's signature plush coat — but also eliminates the guard hair padding on the feet. At 7.5–10 lbs, this creates significant pressure sores on hard flooring. Rex rabbits require soft, clean bedding or solid surfaces covered with fleece at all times.
NYC cost estimate
$200–$600 per episode; severe $800–$1,500
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness/injury.
GI Stasis
Standard GI stasis risk for medium-large breeds. Rex are generally hardy but susceptible to the same triggers as other breeds.
NYC cost estimate
$1,000–$2,000 with hospitalization in NYC
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness if not pre-existing.
Uterine Cancer (unspayed females)
The universal 80% lifetime risk for unspayed females applies. Rex are not a high-risk breed for this but the baseline risk is too significant to ignore.
NYC cost estimate
Spay $600–$1,200 in NYC
Insurance coverage
Cancer treatment covered; preventive spay typically excluded.
Dental Disease
Rex have a normal skull structure and relatively low dental risk compared to lop or dwarf breeds. Annual dental checks are still recommended.
