LionheadManed dwarf breed
The mane that captivates everyone — and the wool that can quietly kill them

Wool mane creates GI blockage risk; compact build adds dental concerns
"Lionhead owners quickly become experts in grooming schedules. The ones who aren't become experts in emergency vet visits instead."
The enrollment timing rule for Lionheads:
Enroll your Lionhead before the first vet visit. Any condition documented before your policy start date is permanently excluded. For this breed, that means enrolling before any dental work, GI episode, or ear treatment is recorded.
Health Conditions & Coverage
Wool Block (GI Obstruction)
Unlike cats, rabbits cannot vomit. When a Lionhead ingests its own mane fur during grooming — which happens constantly — it accumulates in the GI tract. Wool block can cause complete obstruction requiring emergency surgery. The mane requires daily grooming to reduce risk.
NYC cost estimate
$1,500–$3,500 for surgical obstruction removal in NYC
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness/obstruction. Carriers may apply husbandry exclusions in clear preventable-neglect cases.
GI Stasis
Lionheads face elevated GI stasis risk due to fur ingestion, compact build, and stress sensitivity. The combination of wool block risk and stasis risk makes this the most critical health area for the breed.
NYC cost estimate
$1,000–$2,000 with hospitalization in NYC
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness if not pre-existing.
Eye Issues (Conjunctivitis)
The dense mane can irritate the eyes, causing chronic conjunctivitis and tear staining. Lionheads with double-mane genetics face higher risk. Usually manageable with grooming but can recur.
NYC cost estimate
$150–$400 per episode
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness.
Dental Disease
Lionheads are a dwarf breed with a compressed skull, increasing dental misalignment risk compared to standard-sized breeds.
NYC cost estimate
$300–$600 for trim; $1,200–$2,500 for abscess
Insurance coverage
Covered as illness if not pre-existing.
